Did you know that about five billion condoms are used worldwide every year? Considering how many of us actually use them, it’s surprising how little we generally know about them.
I bet you didn’t know that some condoms are still made from lamb’s intestines, did you? Back in the 18th century this was perfectly normal but most of us think that all condoms are made of latex these days. 99% of condoms are, but there really are still some made from lamb’s intestines.
Although condoms look pretty small, they can actually hold about four pints of milk. Or water. Or semen. Although I doubt anybody is likely to produce quite that much! What matters is that no matter how heavy a shooter you are, a condom should be able to take it without bursting. In fact, although a burst condom is often blamed for unwanted pregnancies, the truth is that very, very few of them ever break.
While we’ve all heard of Durex and Mates, did you know that Goodyear, the tyre people, were the first to patent modern condoms? They were made of crepe rubber back in 1844 but were definitely the forerunners of the condoms we use today. In fact, alongside Durex and Mates there are about 100 different brands of condom on the market.
Oh, and although we tend to think that men are more likely to buy condoms than women, the fact is, women purchase between 40 – 70% of condoms, depending on where in the world they live.
Now that you know all this, next time you’ve just removed your condom and are relaxing next to whoever you just shagged, you’ll be able to impress them with your condom knowledge. Or maybe not?
