The History of Swinging

Last week I was asked where swinging originated and when and felt more than just a little embarrassed at not knowing the answer. Being as I’m one of those people who like to know, I decided to set about finding out a bit more about the history of swinging.

Evidently, the term ’swinging’ was first used back in 1950 in the States, with the first swingers’ society, The Sexual Freedom League, being founded ten years later in California.

The following decade saw societies popping up all over the USA, no doubt helped along by the hippie culture of “make love not war”, a philosophy I personally adhere to.

It didn’t take long before the rest of the world followed the American lead and these days there are societies and clubs in most countries worldwide.

So there you go. Now you know. Swinging, as we know it, has been around for about 65 years, and was ‘invented’ by the randy Americans.

I’m guessing that there were swingers long before a name was developed though, and that swinging was happening all over the world long before the first organised society was formed. I mean, wasn’t group sex around during Cleopatra’s time?
