A friend of mine sells sex toys and lingerie at home parties. She has a lot of fun doing it but when she told me that men aren’t allowed to attend as long as the sex toys are being demonstrated (demonstrated as in switched on), I wanted to know why. Guess what? It’s because our crazy UK law then decrees that the party is an orgy!
Well that got me wondering about what other sex laws we have in our green and pleasant land, especially those that might affect the swinging lifestyle. Believe me, I was surprised at what I came up with.
I’ve long known that swingers clubs and organised parties aren’t legal in the UK but I didn’t know why. According to some archaic law, anywhere that two or more people engage in sex is considered a brothel, even though the women aren’t prostitutes! And as if that isn’t bad enough, those participating don’t even have to have penetrative sex!
I’m not sure where the line’s drawn, though. Is it permissible for three people to take turns kissing each other without the building they’re in becoming a brothel? Can they give each other a grope? Do they have to have touched each other’s sexual organs? I don’t know.
Although this mad law hasn’t been enforced against swingers, it has been used against club owners and party organisers, a situation that’s made it difficult for entrepreneurs to raise the finance needed to invest in quality clubs. Investors are loath to go near them for fear of being prosecuted for running a brothel and living off of immoral earnings (again, even though no prostitution is or has taken place).
This law dates back to 1751 and has never been revised. Isn’t it about time the government took a look at it and accepted that society has changed enormously over the past 250 odd years? Maybe then we could also have similar clubs to those found in Amsterdam, Paris and the US. Clubs that swingers can walk proudly into; clubs where we can enjoy a good meal and perhaps even stay for a few nights in a luxury room.
I always knew we Brits were behind the rest of Europe in many ways but calling a house a brothel just because a threesome’s taking place there, that really takes the biscuit.
